Smoking and healthy live association visited the Social Welfare Bureau Healthy Life Education Center

In order to understand smoking prevention education activities and its development, the smoking and healthy live association visited the Social Welfare Bureau Healthy Life Education Center on October 28, 2011, Ferreira, President of the Association and members of the board of directors were received by Hoi Va Pou, director of the drug abuse prevention division, during the visit they observed lesson, discussed and exchanged views.


Director Hoi Va Pou introduced the functions and services of the drug abuse prevention division to the representatives of the association, especially focusing on the smoking prevention programs designed for primary and secondary school students. Fifth graders are the object for the primary school curriculum, and for high school curriculum the object are first year junior high school students, the issue of smoking are being explored with students through innovative teaching materials and interactive teaching methods, aiming to prevent student smoking.


The theme of the 5th grade lesson observed that day was "Clear the Smoke", the lesson content focuses on the effects of smoking, including knowledge of the function of the respiratory system and the individual and social impact of smoking; encourage critical thinking; and learn to deal with peer pressure and train in skills on how to refuse. Visitors appreciate the curriculum design and the advance equipment in the classroom that enable students to learn happily through interactive teaching methods and to absorb knowledge on health and drug prevention.


President Ferreira thanked the Bureau for the reception and arrangements, through this visit, members get to know about the general development of smoking prevention work of Macao and learning from this experience is beneficial for the promotion of tobacco harm and tobacco control education, at the same time strengthening the exchanges and cooperation between NGOs and the Government to jointly contribute to a "Smoke-free Macau, healthy life".


"Healthy Life Education Center" is a facility especially established by the Social Welfare Bureau in 2003 for children drug prevention education, services users are local children aged 5 -12.  Aim to improve children's awareness of the benefits of healthy living and the dangers of drug abuse through interactive teaching method, professional curriculum and facilities.
